Shikishi art - spontaneous ink drawing on Japanese paper

The lecturer, Roberta Bergmann, works among others as a book illustrator. Here, she likes to use analogue techniques like brushes and inks. Her illustrations are also inspired among others by Japanese calligraphy and Sumi-e ink painting. Roberta has been developing a series of spontaneous ink drawings on shikishi cardboard, a traditional Japanese painting board, for years. Based on this idea of spontaneous ink drawings, in this workshop Roberta Bergmann will give insights into her method of working with brushes, drawing pens and ink. The drawing process is like a relaxation technique and has something meditative about it, whereby there is no right or wrong. The artists don't use templates, they draw using their imagination. In addition to free work, Roberta will also show own book illustrations as demonstration material that were completed using this technique and subsequently published.
